Remembering May 13

40 years ago on this date of May 13, our nation witnessed a tragedy so painful it should never be forgot. We must today be reminded of the dangers of racial politics, the consequences of intolerance, and the reason why Malaysians should never ever again allow ourselves to be divided and ruled by our ethnicity.

I represent a younger generation born post-69, but I feel the anguish and fear of my elders who tell me their stories from that May 13. Let not the supremacy of few reign over the people’s hopes for change, equality, and justice. Let not evil, selfish, and greedy agendas hide behind the veil of holy or racial causes.   And let not Malaysian society descend into another nadir of despair and her people’s freedom be continually subject to the anti-democratic movement’s tyrannical rule.

As we solemnly remember this day and its victims, let us now be united in hand and voice to tell those who say we can’t that we can, for this day shall no more be a shadow but a guiding light over our ability to love each other and make Malaysia a better home.
